Sugar-Free Pumpkin Spiced Protein Latte Recipe

A recipe for a creamy, hot, Paleo and Keto friendly Pumpkin Spice Festive Latte that will have you wishing it was autumn all year round!

What is a pumpkin spiced latte?

The original recipe of a PSL (pumpkin spice latte) was a shot of espresso combined with the flavours of the famous American treat (The Pumpkin Pie), which was a much loved "fall" recipe (That's Autumn if in the UK). The creamy pumpkin filling mixed with the hot coffee and autumnal spices, was an instant hit and has become a must have drink to pass from summer into winter.

Where did the pumpkin spiced latte come from originally?

Well Starbucks would have you believe that the Pumpkin Spiced Latte was all their own creation, however some sources say that the combination of a hot coffee and a pumpkin pie was around long before this and loved by many. There was also reports of smaller local coffee shops having a pumpkin pie recipe on their coffee menus. Starbucks however, did take this delicious pairing and take it to new seasonal heights with the invention of their espresso, hot milk, pumpkin spice and whipped cream Latte, which become a best seller for them and continues to do so today.

Do you use real pumpkins in a pumpkin spiced latte?

Yes, it has to be real pumpkin for us! The best way is to pick up a cooking pumpkin from the shops around halloween time and roast it in the oven, then blend to make a creamy puree. This can be used in so many autumnal recipes, just freeze into portions. You can also find pumpkin puree in a tin, but watch for added ingredients like sugar or chemical preservatives.

How many sugars are in a normal "store bought" pumpkin spiced latte?

A pumpkin spice latte can be a delicious health optimising drink with the addition of Collagen and MCT oil, like this recipe - however beware not all PSL's will be the same. Here is a breakdown of the sugars and ingredients in the leading Coffee chain recipe:

Starbucks -

50g of sugar per cup! (That's 12 teaspoons per cup!)

Ingredients: Milk, Pumpkin Spice Sauce [Sugar, Condensed Skim Milk, Pumpkin Puree, Contains 2 Or Less Of Fruit And Vegetable Juice For Color, Natural Flavors, Annatto, Salt, Potassium Sorbate], Brewed Espresso, Whipped Cream [Cream (Cream, Mono And Diglycerides, Carageenan), Vanilla Syrup (Sugar, Water, Natural Flavors, Potassium Sorbate, Citric Acid)], Pumpkin Spice Topping [Cinnamon, Ginger, Nutmeg, Clove, Sulfiting Agents]

Wow, the sugar levels in this one cup plus the added Potassium Sorbate, Citric Acid and other chemicals is a real no go for us.

That's why we came up with our own Keto, Paleo and Sugar-free recipe below!
