ketchup with real ingredients without sacrificing taste

Ketchup is probably one of the sauces we think about least and reach for most. Eggs, burgers, chips, sandwiches, the side of the plate - somehow the bottle always seems to empty. Which feels like a pretty good reason to care about what goes into it.Ours starts with tomatoes, because they should be doing most of the work.

They bring their own natural sweetness and rich tomato flavour, which means there is no need for added sugar, syrups or artificial sweeteners to make this taste like proper ketchup. Apple cider and balsamic vinegars bring brightness and tang, balanced with pink Himalayan salt, onion and garlic. Then come black pepper, cayenne, coriander, clove and allspice, building the gentle savoury warmth and depth behind every dollop.

It’s a recipe made from real, recognisable ingredients, without seed oils or chemical preservatives getting in the way. And that matters because better ingredients shouldn’t mean settling for something that tastes like the “better-for-you” version.

Ketchup still needs to be ketchup: rich, tangy, smooth, glossy and satisfyingly thick. The kind you pour generously, dip chips into and put straight on the table for everyone to share.

Made in the UK and bottled in glass. A familiar everyday sauce, simply made with ingredients worth recognising.

From a problem everyone had but nobody solved

Hunter & Gather began in 2017 with Amy and Jeff and a belief that everyday food could be made better. Amy grew up coeliac, reading every label and cooking from scratch from an early age. Jeff came to real food through his own journey with diet, lifestyle and supplementation. Different beginnings, but the same belief: food should be made from things your body recognises.

Real ingredients, chosen with purpose, without compromising on taste. It started with a jar of mayonnaise. Today, that same thinking goes into everything we make.

What is in Classic Tomato Ketchup?

Tomato paste makes up 43% of the bottle, alongside water, apple cider vinegar, balsamic vinegar, pink Himalayan salt, onion, garlic and a blend of black pepper, cayenne, coriander, clove and allspice. There are no artificial sweeteners, flavourings or chemical preservatives.

Is there any sugar added to the ketchup?

No sugar or syrups are added to make it taste sweet. The sugars listed on the label occur naturally in the tomatoes and in the balsamic vinegar, which is made with concentrated grape must. There is 7.8g of naturally occurring sugars per 100g.

Why has the bottle changed to glass?

Glass is recyclable, it keeps the sauce better, and it belongs on a table rather than in a cupboard door. It does mean giving up the squeeze, which we know some people will miss. On balance we think the bottle is worth the change.

What does Classic Tomato Ketchup go with?

Eggs, burgers, chips and roasted vegetables, sandwiches and wraps, and anything served as part of a family meal or a sharing plate. It also works stirred into cooking, where the tomato depth and the vinegar do useful things to a sauce or a marinade.

How should I store the ketchup?

Refrigerate after opening and follow the storage guidance printed on the bottle. The vinegar and pink Himalayan salt naturally help preserve it, but there are no chemical preservatives doing that work, so the fridge matters more than it might with other brands.
