If you had told our ancestors that one day we would upload our blood test results into a digital screen and receive personalised advice from an invisible intelligence trained on billions of documents, it would have sounded like myth. Or sorcery.
For most of human history, health knowledge lived in bodies and communities. You learned from elders. You observed seasons. You noticed how food made you feel. Wisdom was slow, embodied, passed down around fires rather than fed through fibre-optic cables.
Now, more than 230 million people globally ask ChatGPT health and wellness questions every week. According to OpenAI, one in four regular users submit a health-related prompt. Quietly, almost without ceremony, artificial intelligence has become a first port of call before a GP appointment.
Many of us have done it. A late-night search. A symptom typed in before we’ve even told a partner.

The question is not whether we will use AI for our health. We already do. The question is how.

Earlier this month, OpenAI officially launched ChatGPT Health in the United States - a dedicated health-focused version of its chatbot designed to analyse personal medical records and wellness data in order to generate more personalised responses.
According to OpenAI, health is already one of ChatGPT’s most common use cases. ChatGPT Health creates a separate space within the platform where users can connect medical records and apps such as Apple Health and MyFitnessPal, allowing conversations to be grounded in individual data rather than general prompts.
In practical terms, this means your lab results, wearable data and appointment summaries can sit inside the same system that explains them.
The company states that Health conversations are encrypted, stored separately from other chats, and not used to train its foundation models. It emphasises that the tool is intended to “support, not replace” clinicians, and is not designed for diagnosis or treatment. More than 260 physicians across 60 countries reportedly contributed feedback over two years to refine how the model responds to health queries.
As reported by the BBC, the feature is currently available only in the United States, with medical record integrations limited to US healthcare networks. It has not launched in the UK, Switzerland or the European Economic Area, where data protection regulations are stricter.
The rollout has been described by some commentators as a “watershed moment” in digital health. Others, including privacy advocates cited by the BBC, warn that health data is among the most sensitive information individuals can share and that safeguards must remain “airtight,” particularly as AI companies explore commercial expansion.
In other words, this is not simply a feature update. It is a signal of where digital healthcare may be heading.
And like most signals of the future, it carries both promise and tension.
For those focused on prevention rather than crisis management, the potential here is significant.
Artificial intelligence is exceptionally good at identifying patterns over time. It can synthesise wearable data, lab results and lifestyle inputs in seconds. It does not tire. It does not have to rush to the next appointment. It does not have to perform under the constraints of a underserviced health system.

There is something quietly empowering about that.

And as AI companies explore new commercial models, the long-term governance of personal health data remains an evolving landscape.
The Conversation also highlights another practical reality: medical records are often incomplete. AI may only ever see part of the picture. It cannot analyse what it cannot access.
None of this requires alarmism. It does require literacy.
Uploading your medical history into any system should never feel casual.
Empowerment without sovereignty is fragile. Before sharing sensitive data, it is worth pausing, not out of fear, but out of respect for its value.
If you choose to use AI tools for health, intention matters.
Use them to clarify, not to diagnose. Asking an AI to explain medical terminology, summarise appointment notes or help you prepare questions for your doctor carries lower risk than asking it to interpret complex symptoms or recommend treatment changes.

You could brainstorm practical ways to incorporate collagen-rich foods such as bone broth into a busy routine, or generate recipe ideas using avocado oil or ghee instead of industrial seed oils.
In this context, AI becomes a creative assistant, not a clinical authority.
Protect your data deliberately. Review permissions. Understand what you are uploading. Enable additional security controls where available.
Most importantly, let it support patterns rather than override instinct. Notice how you feel after meals. Pay attention to sleep, energy and stress.
If something feels off, that signal still belongs to you.
AI is only as good as the information you give it, and the discernment you apply.
Artificial intelligence is now part of the healthcare landscape. That reality is unlikely to reverse.
The choice before us is not ancestral living versus modern innovation. It is how to integrate the two without losing the essence of either.
Used wisely, AI can surface patterns, clarify confusion and support preventative awareness. Used uncritically, it risks becoming a crutch that dulls instinct and concentrates power in opaque systems.
